Structure of the written part of the exam in English. Unified State Exam in English

Running time four written sections exam paper– 180 minutes.

The oral part of the exam is carried out on a separate day, the task completion time, including preparation time, is 15 minutes.

Total time for completing all sections of the examination paper: 195 minutes.

“Listening” – 30 minutes;

“Reading” – 30 minutes;

“Grammar and vocabulary” – 40 minutes;

“Letter” – 80 minutes;

The oral part of the exam is 15 minutes.

Task 39, formerly C1– this is a basic level task, and for its completion the student can receive the maximum 6 points (20 min); task 40 (C2)– this is a high-level task, and for its completion the student can receive the maximum 14 points (60 min). Therefore, the Writing section as a whole is worth a maximum of 20 marks. Thus, specific gravity section “Writing” 25% of the maximum test score (100 points).

ü A peculiarity of the assessment of tasks 39 and 40 is that if the examinee receives 0 points according to the criterion “Solving a communicative problem”, the entire task is assessed at 0 points.

ü When assessing tasks in the “Writing” section (39, 40), you should take into account such a parameter as volume written text, expressed in number of words. Required volume for a personal letter in task 39 – 100–140 words; for a detailed written statement in task 40 – 200–250 words The permissible deviation from the specified volume is 10%. If completed task 39 contains less than 90 words or task 40 contains less than 180 words, then the task is not subject to verification and is scored 0 points. If the volume is exceeded by more than 10%, i.e. if completed task 39 contains more than 154 words or task 40 contains more than 275 words, only that part of the work that corresponds to the required volume is subject to verification. Thus, when checking task 39, 140 words are counted from the beginning of the work, task 40 - 250 words, and only this part of the work is assessed.

ü When assessing task 40, special attention is paid to the examinee’s ability to produce a detailed written statement. If more than 30% of the answer is unproductive (i.e. textually coincides with the published source), then 0 points are given according to the criterion “Solving a communicative problem”, and, accordingly, the entire task is scored 0 points.

ü In accordance with the Procedure for conducting state final certification for educational programs average general education(Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia dated December 26, 2013 No. 1400 was registered by the Ministry of Justice of Russia on February 3, 2014 No. 31205)

The expert carrying out the third check is provided with information about the scores assigned by the experts who previously checked the examination work.”

When assessing the completion of written part tasks, a third expert is appointed in the following cases.

1. If the discrepancy between the sums of points assigned by two experts for task 39 for all (three) assessment positions of this task is 3 or more points, then the third expert assigns points for all three assessment positions for task 39.

2. If the discrepancy between the sums of points assigned by two experts for task 40 for all (five) assessment positions of this task is 5 or more points, then the third expert assigns points for all five assessment positions for task 40.

Schools participating in the pilot project are even less fortunate: their graduates will be required to take English in 2020.

“Well, tests ain't fair. Those that study have an unfair advantage. It's always been that way.”

Well, exams aren't fair. Those who teach have an unfair advantage. And it has always been like this.

~ Allan Dare Pearce, Paris in April

Despite the growing popularity, Unified State Exam in English It is considered one of the most difficult exams for school graduates and university applicants. Even thorough preparation and Cambridge Exams certificates do not guarantee you high score on the Unified State Exam. “How can this be?” - you ask.

The thing is, just like anyone else international exam(FCE, KET, IELTS, etc.), the Unified State Exam in English has its own structure, typical tasks and assessment criteria, which directly affect your result.

Today we will try to tell you what exactly everyone who plans to pass the Unified State Exam in English in 2019-2020.

Unified State Examination in English:

The Unified State Exam in English is taken in 11th grade and is the final exam for graduates Russian schools.

Unified State Exam (USE) is the state final certification of eleventh grade students in Russian schools. Unified State Exam results give the opportunity, during the year when the exam was taken, and the next 4 years, to choose and enroll in a secondary specialized or higher educational institution.

Unified State Examination in English is divided into two parts: written and oral. The written part of the Unified State Exam lasts 3 hours (180 minutes), and oral only 15 minutes including preparation time.

On the Unified State Examination in English, graduates are asked to complete 44 tasks, namely:

● 38 closed tasks in which you only need to choose the correct answer

● 6 tasks with a detailed answer, where you need to write or tell it yourself.

Maximum points, which can be scored for all tasks (oral and written) on the Unified State Exam in English - 100 points(80 points for written and 20 points for oral).

The speaking part is optional, but you can only get 100 points if you took the speaking test on a separate day.

In 2018 year of the Unified State Exam 72,500 people took the English test, 15 people passed with 100 points. This represents 0.02% of the total number of participants and is the lowest figure for elective subjects.

Passing score when the English exam is considered "passed", in 2018 was 22 points, but for admission to good university or on profile specialty this, of course, is not enough. The principle here is: “the higher the score, the better.” Universities change their passing score every year from 60-80 points, and by what more prestigious university- the higher the score.

It is already known that in 2019 the Unified State Exam in English will be held on the following days:

  1. Early period: March 27, 2019 (oral part) and 04/01/2019 (written part)
  2. Main period: June 5, 2019 (written), June 7-8 (oral)

Among the people who can take the exam earlier than the main period: graduates of previous years, participants in olympiads/competitions, schoolchildren who are going to serve in the army or planning to study abroad, and many others.

In case of force majeure, there are also reserve days when the exam can be held.

What level of English is needed to pass the Unified State Exam?

If you want to get a high score on the Unified State Exam in English, your level must be not lower than Upper-Intermediate level according to the CEFR scale, but this does not at all mean that students with a lower level will have nothing to gain in the exam.

According to regulatory documents, Unified State Examination tasks in English vary in complexity from basic (A2/A2+) to high (B2) and, accordingly, includes three levels:

  • base: Elementary (A2) and Pre-Intermediate (A2+)
  • elevated: Intermediate (B1), can be skipped
  • high: Upper-Intermediate (B2)

However, in reality this is not always the case. For example, in 2018, the first listening task contained materials at the A2 difficulty level, and the reading text in task 3 was at the Advanced (C1) level. Therefore, the majority of applicants, even with level B2, were unable to achieve a high score on this task.

Sometimes the compilers Unified State Exam in English include tasks of basic and high levels in one block, leaving them behind increased level(B1). The sudden transition from simple to super-complex can confuse anyone and affect their ability to comprehend more complex material.

CEFR scale of English language levels for passing the Unified State Exam

● degrees of comparison of adjectives

● ordinal numbers

According to vocabulary, participants incorrectly used ambiguous words in context, did not know synonyms and antonyms, confused suffixes and prefixes when forming new words. And, of course, they made spelling mistakes!

Section "Letter" As expected, it turned out to be the most difficult test for those taking the 2018 Extension Test in English.

In the “Writing” task, participants lost points for:

  • incorrect or inaccurate answers to questions
  • combining answers to two questions into one
  • rhetorical questions to a friend

In the “Essay” task, for many, the loss of points was associated not with the required volume, but with the following:

  • failure to follow the plan
  • inability to open up the topic
  • undisclosed topics
  • violation of the logic of the statement
  • a large number of grammatical, lexical and spelling errors.

Well oral part of the exam, which was passed with an “excellent” 65%, was not without some unpleasant errors. In task No. 1, the examiners noted incorrect stress and incorrect logical intonation, in task No. 2 - grammatical errors in constructing questions.

Task No. 3 from the “Speaking” section showed that the majority simply memorize school topics, and accordingly there is no spontaneity of speech. In task No. 4, participants often gave incomplete answers and did not carefully read the task.

The order of counting words in the tasks of the “Writing” section When assessing the tasks of the “Writing” section (39, 40), one should take into account such a parameter as the volume of written text, expressed in the number of words. The required volume for a personal letter in task 39 is 100–140 words; for a detailed written statement in the task, 40 – 200–250 words. The permissible deviation from the specified volume is 10%. Thus, when checking task 39, 140 words are counted from the beginning of work, task 40 - 250 words, and only this part of the work is assessed. When determining whether the scope of the submitted work meets the above requirements, all words are considered, from the first word to the last, including auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles, particles. In a personal letter, the address, date, signature are also subject to calculation. In this case: - contracted (short) forms can"t, didn"t, isn"t, I"m, etc. count as one word; - numerals expressed in numbers, i.e. 1, 25, 2009, 126 204, etc., are counted as one word;  numerals, expressed in numbers, together with the symbol of percentages, i.e. 25%, 100%, etc. are counted as one word; - numerals expressed in words are counted as words; - difficult words, such as good-looking, well-bred, English-speaking, twenty-five, are counted as one word;  abbreviations, for example USA, e-mail, TV, CD-rom, are counted as one word.

Unified State Exam - 2016 SPEAKING (ORAL PART) Since 2016, the oral part, or speaking, has become a mandatory component of the Unified State Exam in English. It represents a set of four tasks: 1) reading the text, 2) asking several direct questions, 3) describing one picture, 4) comparing two pictures. Next, we will look at each type of task in detail.

18 slide

Slide description:

Task 1. Reading the text. The task itself is formulated as follows: Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it. Thus, according to legend, you and a friend are preparing a project. You found interesting material for a presentation and want to read it to your friend. You will have one and a half minutes to prepare for reading, after which you will have another minute and a half to read. This task can earn you 1 point. To get one coveted point, you can make two serious mistakes. A serious mistake is when one word is written, and you read it in such a way that it turns out something else. For example, the word as [ez] is written - “when”, “how”, and you read it as [es] - “donkey”! Stunning the final voiced consonant is a typical mistake of most students taking the exam in English, which often fails them.

Slide 19

Slide description:

Task 2. Direct questions. Work with pictures begins with the second task. The 2016 demo offers the following image:

20 slide

Slide description:

Task 2. Study the advertisement. You are considering starting breakdance lessons and now you’d like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five direct questions to find out about the following: 1) tuition fee 2) course location 3) duration of the course 4) special clothes 5) evening classes You have 20 seconds to ask each question. So, according to legend, you are about to enroll in a breakdancing school. But you have questions that you would like to find out. You have one and a half minutes to prepare. Then you are given 20 seconds for each question. The most important thing you must understand is what a direct question is. Let's explain with examples: How much does the tuition cost? Where is the course located? How long will the course last? Do I need any special clothes? Can I visit the class in the evening? Each question is worth one point. Five questions – five points. But in order to get them, you need to ask direct questions (and not indirect ones) and avoid making gross mistakes in the choice of words and pronunciation.

Slide description:

In the third task you are given three pictures to choose from. Task 3. Description of one picture. The task itself is formulated as follows: Task 3. Imagine that these are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about: where and when the photo was taken what/who is in the photo what is happening why you keep the photo in your album why you decided to show the picture to your friend

22 slide

Slide description:

You begin your story with the phrase: I’ve chosen photo number 1. This phrase is not an introduction and does not count towards the volume of the statement. Here is the introduction: To start with, I’d like to say that I have a friend. His name is Steve. He lives abroad and sometimes visits Russia with his family. Next, you proceed to the points of the plan. The first point is where and when the photo was taken, i.e. where and when the photo was taken. You can say: I took this photo in my flat when Steve visited me last month. Frankly speaking, his visit was so unexpected. But I was over-excited to meet him at my place. The second point is what/who is in the photo, i.e. who/what is in the photo. You continue the story: You can see Steve and his wife in the photo. Their daughters wanted to be photographed, too. The third point is what is happening, i.e. what exactly is happening in the picture. You say: The family are sitting on the sofa, smiling and showing love for each other. They are really happy. The third point is why you keep the photo in your album, i.e. why do you keep this photo in your album. Your answer: I keep the photo in my album to have an opportunity to show this picture to all my guests. In addition to it, I often look at the photo to recall the nice moments when we were sitting here and talking about our life. The fourth point is why you decided to show the picture to your friend, i.e. why did you decide to show this photo to your friend. You can give the following reason: I’m showing the picture to you because you have always wanted to see how Steve looks like. And conclusion: Now you know how my friend looks like. Next time I will show more pictures to you. This task is assessed on three aspects: a) solution of a communicative task (content), b) organization of the utterance and c) linguistic design of the utterance. Our goal is to get the maximum score in all aspects. To get the maximum score for content (3 points), we need to cover all aspects and keep it within 12-15 sentences. To get the maximum score for organization (2 points), we must have an introduction and conclusion, consistency in the disclosure of task points, and the correct means of logical connection. According to legend, a friend comes to you and you show your photo album. You select one photo from the album and begin a story about it according to a certain plan. We immediately focus on the volume of the statement - 12-15 sentences. Those. approximately two sentences for each point of the plan and two sentences for the introduction and conclusion.

Slide 23

Slide description:

You need to construct your statement according to the same principles as the previous one, since the fourth task is assessed on the same aspects and criteria as the third. Therefore, make sure that your story has an introduction and conclusion, a clear sequential disclosure of the points of the task, and a means of logical connection. And don’t forget about the volume – 12-15 sentences. The task is formulated as follows: Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs: give a brief description of the photos (action, location) say what the pictures have in common say in what way the pictures are different say which of the activities presented in the pictures you' d prefer explain why Task 4. Comparing pictures. In the fourth task you need to compare two pictures, again following a certain plan. The 2016 demo contains the following pictures:

English is the most popular of the four languages taken as part of the Unified State Exam. English is no more difficult or easier than German, French or Spanish. Structure of the Unified State Exam in English is also no different from the Unified State Examination in other foreign languages.

Testing is spread over two days. On the first day, the student takes the compulsory written part, consisting of four sections:

  • Section 1: Listening (1-9), answers to tasks are a number or a sequence of numbers.
  • Section 2: Reading (10-18), the answers to the tasks are a number or a sequence of numbers.
  • Section 3: Grammar and Vocabulary (19-38), the answer to the task is a number, a word or several words written without spaces or punctuation.
  • Section 4: Writing (39-40), consists of two tasks - writing a personal letter and a statement with elements of reasoning.

There are a total of 40 tasks in the written part, and 180 minutes are allotted for them.

On the second day of the exam, students take the oral part, which consists of four tasks (to test speaking skills). You have 15 minutes to complete the oral exam.

To pass the exam, you need to correctly solve at least 17 tasks from section 3 or 2 and 3. Thus, you gain 17 primary points, which, when converted into test points, give 22. It is worth noting that only for the written part you can get no more than 80 points.

To differentiate examinees by level of foreign language proficiency, the work includes tasks of different difficulty levels: basic (A2+ on the Council of Europe scale), advanced (B1) and high (B2). Within each section of the work, tasks are arranged in increasing order of difficulty.

The distribution of tasks by level of difficulty in an examination paper in a foreign language differs from papers in other subjects. In English, the complexity of a task is determined not by its type, but by the complexity of the language material used and the skills being tested. So, for example, task 39 (personal letter) belongs to the basic (simplest) level of complexity, and tasks 12-18 in reading are at a high level and, therefore, are among the most difficult to complete.

For completing each section, the examinee can receive a maximum of 20 initial points. In the absence of the “Speaking” section, the maximum primary score was 80, which was then multiplied by a factor of 1.25. Thus, the examinee received a maximum of 100 final test points.

In 2015, the section “Speaking” was introduced into the examination paper in a foreign language. Taking into account the oral part of the exam, the maximum initial score is 100 and no additional recalculation is necessary. Thus, the final test score equal to the number of primary points scored.

The “Speaking” section in the new format includes 4 open-type tasks with a detailed answer, of which 3 are basic level tasks (1-3) and one high-level task (4). The maximum score for completing the “Speaking” section is 20 points.

The number of points scored by the examinee in the sections “Listening”, “Reading”, “Grammar and Vocabulary” is determined using automated processing of answer forms No. 1. For each correct answer, the student receives 1 point. For an incorrect answer or no answer, the student receives 0 points.

The level of development of a complex of productive skills in the sections “Writing” and “Speaking” is determined by experts who have undergone special training in assessing Unified State Examination tasks in accordance with methodological recommendations on the assessment of tasks with a detailed answer prepared by FIPI.

The minimum number of test points confirming the graduate’s mastery general education program in a foreign language, is 22 points (according to 2015 data)
