Almost at the same time when most men in Russia give up and throw the Christmas tree out of the house, then I decided to start summing up the anime year 2015. Your humble servant usually avoids the genre of the first series, but this time I couldn’t resist and decided to watch it. Here is the romantic shojo "Dawn of Yona" (Akatsuki no Yona). I hope after my opinion you will understand whether you should watch this anime or not.
Anime plot
The plot invites us to be transported to the Kouka empire, where the local ruler is famous for his peacefulness and desire to resolve all disputes without weapons. He has a beautiful red-haired daughter, Yona. She lives in luxury and prosperity, rarely encountering difficulties, and her main experience is her love for her cousin Su-won.
While the girl is burning with her feelings for one of her childhood friends, another old friend, Hak, guards her peace with a faithful dog. This is exactly how the first 16 years of her life passed.
Everything changes on her birthday, when unknown people attack the imperial palace. While Hak rejected the attack of the soldiers who betrayed him, Yona rushes to the royal chambers. It is there that she discovers the bloody body of her father, and next to him an armed man. It doesn’t take long before she understands what exactly happened. Moments pass and with them comes the realization of what happened. Her beloved friend Soo-won killed the emperor and seized power. And probably everything would have ended badly if the courageous Hak had not saved the princess.
They flee the palace and are now declared traitors. In an effort to lick received physical and mental wounds, the couple stops in Haka's home village, where his father held the position of headman. Realizing that sooner or later the traitor's troops will find them, Yona is considering the possibility of punishing the murderer of her family.
From Hak's father, she learns the legend of the dragon and the first emperor. In it, the ruler was of divine origin, and the dragon was his faithful servant. After the death of the emperor, the dragon distributed his abilities to several people and now they are waiting for the true ruler to call them under his banner.
It is Yona who is a blood relative of the first emperor, and her red hair is their common symbol. She and her true friend and the servant Hak, set off on a long journey, where she will have to find the children of the Dragon and seriously change.
Opinion about anime
Let's start with my brief assessment. Did I like the anime Yona's Dawn? Overall... yes, I liked it. I actually initially approached this series with a lot of skepticism. It was enough to look at the first poster of the anime, where the girl is surrounded by various men. I immediately imagine that I’m about to watch a classic and hackneyed story about how a bunch of guys seek the hand of one representative of the fair sex. Upon examination, it turned out that “The Dawn of Yonah” is about something completely different.
Although there is a romantic line here, in fact it is only one and does not look superfluous. The emphasis of the story is precisely on how Yona herself changes from episode to episode. This is actually interesting to watch, especially if you remember that initially she was a capricious court maiden without character or any skills. Immediately, her share reveals not only the death of her father, but also other trials and hardships. They are the ones who begin to change her and make her look at the whole situation from a different angle.
The authors did a good job on other aspects of the plot; many events are presented from different angles. For example, the father's personality main character should not have been seriously discussed, because Yona herself remembers him as a very wise and kind ruler. However, in the series itself, more than once her blind faith is tested by what she sees and hears. At some point, she realizes that peacefulness and cowardice are very similar to each other and you can cross the line at any moment, without even noticing it. And now the heroine is in great doubt about who the emperor really was?
But I would go far from the truth if I only told about positive aspects anime "Yona's Dawn" In fact, there are also plenty of disadvantages here. And what immediately catches your eye is the presence of a large number of cliches in the plot and characters. If the main character gradually evolves, then the guys are a typical set for an Asian boy band. Yes, if you are an underdeveloped schoolgirl, then seeing such guys, a wild squeal of a cut-up boar will burst out of your throat. However, it takes a sane person to understand how flat these images are.
There are certain problems with lengthiness and predictability. The series lasts 24 episodes and during this time several arcs are shown, but there is very little action in them. Only in the second half does the narrative accelerate, and what is happening does not make you depressing. It is difficult to follow the plot with really great interest, because the authors began the first season from the moment they would end it. So you already know who will survive.
To summarize: Yona's Dawn is a good example of an adventure romance anime. Although there is a predictable plot with several uninteresting characters, this does not interfere with watching the main character and her journey. I recommend this anime to everyone who likes romance and adventure. We are waiting for the continuation.

I think, for convenience, the Akatsuki no Yona anime should be divided into three main components - adventure, fantasy and shoujo. (Belonging to the latter genre frightens some viewers, and in this case it is completely in vain). All three are done at a really good level, compared to the overwhelming number of anime in similar genres - absolutely wonderful. But what is truly valuable is how these genres intertwine, how organically they complement each other. Plus heartfelt drama (just look at the fate of both Blue Dragons!) and good, really funny and timely humor. It turned out beautiful, soulful, exciting and... not enough.
The fantasy component turned out to be of high quality. A vague prophecy, a story about the founding of a state, and four warriors with dragon blood and short term life (living proof of its veracity), the attitude towards the chosen ones and the hunters for their power - all this is well interconnected, presented in a timely and interesting way. Plus moments that are not related to magic, but give the world tangibility - geography, politics, religion.
The adventure component was also a success - although, I’ll warn you right away, you shouldn’t expect regular action scenes. Nevertheless, the plot is of interest even after severe spoilers from the first episodes (where it is shown that all the heroes are alive and not even crippled, and those who were supposed to join the team did). In the foreground is the fugitive princess’s search for dragons, in the background is her increasingly looming confrontation with the new emperor. Both are accumulating strength, both want the good of the country; and, no matter how rapidly the heroine develops, her enemy-rival seems to be a much more suitable candidate for the role of emperor. What is the role of the princess in the future life of the country, what was implied in the prophecy?
When watching, you are immersed in the atmosphere of travel: all these forests, mountains, caves, the ocean, overnight stays in the open air, lunch from improvised means, daytime marches and nightly training of the princess in archery. Separately, the detailed life of the heroes is good, with a bunch of little things that will play out in the future. After the manga, noticing them is quite exciting.
Well, and the shojo component. Everything is simple here: touching farewells, a kawaii element, some naivety in the narration, the male characters are completely out of character. I would also include here the love triangle, which gravitates towards a romantic line - and, for my taste, it turned out to be extremely entertaining. The runaway princess and her snide bodyguard are the only friend that connects her with past life and who knew him as a capricious sissy, who did not leave in the most difficult moments and taught him to kill people - an interesting combination, isn’t it? They have known each other for a long time, from the very beginning there is already a certain degree of trust, intimacy, and knowledge of each other between them. She has not yet had time to survive the betrayal of the man she loved before, and does not think about new love, however..?
I can’t help but say about the characters - lovingly written, juicy, interesting and incredibly charismatic. The image of the main character came out wonderful. Such a passionate, flexible, persistent, intelligent, strong and rapidly developing girl is at the same time warm and sincere, quite sensitive and sociable, in general - voluminous and not boring, evoking empathy. Having strengthened her character and learned to kill, she did not turn into an iron maiden or a bitch. The period of her breakup, uncertainty in goals, how the personal is little by little intertwined with the public, her maturity and her weaknesses are well shown. In general, a very harmonious female character, such are rarely seen in anime. And the fact that we were shown her path in detail, from a palace sissy, invariably makes me happy.
The second key character, Hak, was no less successful - a skilled warrior, a devoted friend and a good brother and grandson, a person without whom Yona would not have become what she became. Brash, honest, unmannered, fiercely loyal, snide, witty, somewhat reserved and quite mature.
The third stands apart among the main characters, appearing less often than others: purposeful and reflective, kawaii, cunning, smart and mysterious, he is one of the most ambiguous characters in the series.
Dragons are a different matter. A home boy, practically a paladin - neither thoughtlessly following the call of blood, nor able to deeply perceive and make what was imposed his own. A quiet, social cave dweller, afraid of his own power. A rebel, a joker and a libertine with a broad soul and a reverent attitude towards freedom, carefree and loving attention. A silly, energetic and mysterious guy who asks tricky questions... In theory, these four are a kind of fighting brotherhood within the team of main characters, but can they, despite their different goals and life priorities, call each other brothers?
Well, how can we not mention the “brilliant handsome guy” - self-confident, responsible, inquisitive and ironic, the only one in the squad who, on principle, does not take up weapons and alternately performs the duties of a cook, doctor and nanny?..
Yes, most of the key characters are developed sufficiently, but not one of them is fully developed. They just revealed their personalities, it turned out bright and attractive, but they have yet to gain real depth. However, they are memorable - and each has something to tell the viewer.
The secondary images turned out to be capacious and voluminous: the “cowardly emperor” and his brother, Mundok and his pupils from the wind clan, the monk Ik-Su, the fierce blue dragon Ao, captain Gigan, the general of the Earth Clan and his wife...
The anime is very poorly made. They cut corners in some places, skimped on some things, blurred out some aspects compared to the manga, and added water in others. However, there were some real gems and some truly superbly done moments.
Based on the fact that the plot is large-scale and does not gallop across Europe, in addition, a lot of attention is paid to the characters, twenty-four episodes is very little. Of the one hundred and four chapters of the ongoing manga, only forty-seven have been filmed, and the story has not yet risen to its full height. It just has to grow in depth, breadth, scale, epicness and dynamics. However, the first season should be exactly like this - acceleration, local, cozy, lamp-based. Whether it makes sense to wait for the second one - time will tell, but I wouldn’t refuse. I'm happy with the film adaptation.
At the moment, “Jonah” is an anime with its own charm, exciting, atmospheric and enjoyable.
In the world of Naruto, two years flew by unnoticed. Former newcomers joined the ranks of experienced shinobi at the rank of chunin and jonin. The main characters did not sit still - each became a student of one of the legendary Sannin - the three great ninjas of Konoha. The guy in orange continued his training with the wise but eccentric Jiraiya, gradually ascending to a new level of combat skill. Sakura became the assistant and confidant of the healer Tsunade, the new leader of the Leaf Village. Well, Sasuke, whose pride led to his expulsion from Konoha, entered into a temporary alliance with the sinister Orochimaru, and each believes that they are only using the other for the time being.
The brief respite ended, and events once again rushed with hurricane speed. In Konoha, the seeds of old strife sown by the first Hokage are sprouting again. He is 25, bald and handsome, and, moreover, so strong that with one blow he can annihilate all dangers to humanity. He is looking for himself in a difficult way life path, simultaneously handing out slaps to monsters and villains.
