Marketing education at berkeley. Review of studying at UC Berkeley Business School

Applicants to Berkeley typically provide an English-translated high school diploma or diploma, proof of proficiency English according to the TOEFL system or another certificate confirming completion of accredited courses, as well as a document from the bank confirming the availability of the necessary cash- $27,000 minimum.

Almost three years ago (I was 28 then) I worked as a copywriter at Yandex and really wanted to become a marketer. I read a lot about marketing, but it’s difficult to make your old company take you seriously in your new profession.

I was thinking about going for a second degree in marketing, but I couldn’t make up my mind. I don’t believe in correspondence; studying full-time is too expensive in terms of lost profits (lost wages). There remained an evening department. But by that time I already had a family and a three-year-old child - I didn’t want to take away his evenings for many years.

Time passed and nothing happened.

BOOK

I don’t remember how I bought Oleg Tinkov’s book “I’m like everyone else.” But I remember that I read it avidly in electronic form over two three-hour trips and then was very surprised in the store when I saw how thick it was. :)

My heart began to beat at one paragraph - I learned that Oleg studied marketing at Berkeley for several months. An intensive marketing course with professors from the University of California sounded very cool:

I studied at the Mining Institute for two and a half years and at Berkeley for six months - these two training models cannot even be compared. I officially declare that the Russian educational institutions- This kindergarten. These are cheats and cheat sheets. Nothing. In America, serious work is underway. Plowing. Speaking in Russian, I'm just stuck. There are very difficult exams, I barely passed them, with C grades, and I am proud that I have this diploma hanging in my office. And most importantly, I absorbed everything like a sponge and was well prepared for my next breakthrough - the beer business. Afterwards, Berkeley already knew exactly what, how and why.

AFTER

We were driving along the highway at night, my husband fell asleep at the wheel, I was reading in the back seat. There was a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I allowed myself to entertain this idea in principle - to go study marketing in the States. At first, this seems like too bold an idea when you have a three-year-old child, you rent an apartment, and your savings are barely enough for the minimum payment for a mortgage in the Moscow region. But Tinkov’s story is just about “like everyone else” - it infected me with a feeling of limitless possibilities, and I immediately expressed my idea to my husband, who immediately stopped nodding off and, it seems, did not mind me making inquiries.

The University of Berkeley met my parameters - fast, with the best professors and a beautiful logo on the diploma.)

University of California at Berkeley

Plus San Francisco is nearby. Silicon Valley and famous Californian beaches.

Then the question of price arose - at first $19,500 seemed like a huge amount. As I found out the prices for training in best universities Moscow and multiplied by three years, the amount no longer seemed so huge. More precisely, these two amounts turned out to be identical. The difference is that at a Moscow university, three years of studying in the evenings would separate me from a diploma, and at Berkeley it would be several months of “plowing” day and night.

I chose a four-month course that included the following subjects:

I studied with the co-author of David Aaker's books on strategy, with the former head of the Far Eastern division of Colgate-Palmolive, with a consultant for British Airways, a former Stanford professor, and many teachers with equally great track record. Some taught in very unusual ways. =)

The student population is very diverse, 90% are “like everyone else” different countries. Some sold apartments and cars to be here. Companies paid for others, and parents paid for others.

Unfortunately, there were very few Russians among us. My friends, who easily found $20 thousand to upgrade their car, were very surprised how I could find the same money for education. Official statistics of participants in my program by country:

Having come all this way and spent all my savings, I couldn’t afford to study for C grades (I’m still not Tinkov), although sometimes I wanted to sleep. In the photo - a Chinese student sleeping on his desk during lunch break, poor fellow.

I don't think grades are important. Much more important is communication with specialists, cases, links and ideas, taken in pencil. But to clear my conscience, I did everything to get all the “A’s.” Moreover, it was exciting. As far as I know, there were only two of us in my group who succeeded - me and the Japanese Yohei. He had a couple fewer disadvantages, so he had to give a speech at the graduation :)

The transcript of my grades is the GRADE column.

TOTAL

Probably, if it weren’t for the book, I would still be working as a copywriter in Yandex. The book not only gave me an idea of where exactly to go to study, but “pushed” me out of the state of being a “mom”, saving for a mortgage, working for years in a warm place (in Yandex it is really very warm - in every sense of the word).

For two years now I have been a marketer at Mann, Ivanov and Ferber and I am incredibly happy doing this work. Although, according to recent estimates, the money spent has still not been recovered. But that doesn't matter. I got a job in publishing precisely because books change people's lives. I don't expect million-dollar business ideas from books, but I know that they sharpen my mind and every time I become capable of more. What matters is what happened to you after the book. Change is priceless. :)

If you have stories about useful books that changed your life, send them to the publisher by email [email protected]. Don't forget to add photo evidence of your achievements throughout the text. The most interesting stories will be published on Lifehacker in the “BEFORE and AFTER” section. At the beginning of summer, three stories that received the most large number views, will receive national fame and five business books from the Mann, Ivanov and Ferber publishing house - at the choice of the winners.

Many people probably have a question: what is UC Berkeley Extension?

UC Berkeley Extension is a faculty additional education at the University of California Berkeley. This is not a fancy MBA, but it also doesn’t fit the formal standards of a bachelor’s-master’s-graduate program. In fact, this is a master's degree, but upon completion you will not be awarded a master's degree. The faculty has two main directions - additional evening education for adults - those who have been working in America for many years and want to gain new knowledge in different areas, but I’m not ready to quit my job and the IDP itself, where I’m studying, for this. IDP is an Interational Diploma Program. Special courses for students from all over the world. The main difference from an MBA is the absence of a GMAT requirement for admission, as well as the flexibility of customization. Well, the price.

What is an MBA? - besides the beautiful slogan, this is actually a master’s program, after which a master’s degree in business administration is awarded. In the Western world, a fairly common form of education, often necessary for employment in certain positions in international and local corporations. An MBA teaches you how to work in them and make money for companies. But there are two factors that make an MBA very difficult to actually study there - the costs (from 50 to 100 thousand dollars a year depending on the school) and the duration - usually two years. I couldn't afford either one. I didn’t have sponsors who would feed me for such a long time, and the amount was huge... some people actually manage to take out an education loan with a payment of 10 years, but somehow I didn’t get around to it... but on Being out of business for 2 years was a bit scary... As it turned out later, you can quite successfully attend some MBA sessions while studying at another faculty. UC Berkeley Haas Business School is one of the leading business schools in the United States. Really very cool with a strong bias towards entrepreneurship, start-ups and new technologies (innovations). So, I can almost always attend these sessions for free and you can really learn a lot there.

The flexibility of the IDP program lies in the fact that upon admission you can choose what you want to study. Base - semester. You can either complete a semester and leave (4 months), or take an unpaid internship at a local company for 4 months - as a result, in just 8 months you will have American theoretical knowledge and practice. There is also MBT - which stands for Management and Business Track. Actually, as Gene Hendricks says, MBT is a transport system around Boston, but since the name is similar to MBA, this is such a marketing ploy on Berkeley’s part... when asked what MBT is, you can safely answer that it’s like an MBA only with some academic differences :)

As you can see on the faculty website, there are 5 programs in which you can study - Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Global Management and Project Management. they can be combined, but the basic ones are BA and finance. Those. It’s optimal to take one or the other for the first semester to gain general knowledge, and then one additional one. But everything can be twisted as you want - the programs are independent and can be studied separately.

I took Business Administarion (since it is most similar to an MBA) and Marketing - this is probably closest to me. But for some reason, the dean’s office asked me to swap them - apparently there weren’t enough places on the BA stream... and oh well.

As indicated on the website, a semester of training costs $13,500, which is not so much. If you take an MBT like me, the second semester costs $12,600 - a purely American approach. it’s called rebate :) the practice still costs either 2.5 or 3.5 thousand - I don’t remember exactly. Another wonderful aspect of the matter is the need to pay for each semester separately, i.e. You only need to pay $13,500 first. When you finish - more. This is very convenient if your parents pay for you. Although they must provide certificates from their bank for all the money plus accommodation - there is a scheme. I don’t remember it exactly, but I needed to show something like 55 thousand dollars for two people with my wife.

Another feature of the training is its intensity - unlike an MBA, there is no time to read literature or visit the library, because The course is the same in volume, but instead of a year it lasts 4 months - because I have never been particularly diligent in my studies - this is very good.

Attendance is required. In principle, attendance is even 10 to 20 percent of your grade. I didn’t have a single pass during the marketing semester, which is certainly amazing for a person who was so crazy at Moscow State University. They simply deal with non-attendance - after several absences they stupidly report to the Department of Homeland Security (such as the migration service) and cancel the visa - and goodbye to America for a long time...
